A Happy Birthday To Batsceba. An amazing artist.

Batsceba Hardy is a very active member of our community and I want to personally wish her a Happy Birthday. She goes to a lot of work to promote the works of others through her weekly journals Friday Night Specials, and Progressive Saturday Nights. She is an epic street photographer and has a unique style that I personally love. She has giving me so much support throughout the many months I've known her now. Last year she gave me an amazing birthday present of featuring some of my work. I want to do the same. I want to share some of her favorites of mine with you all.

There is a moment when tranquillity becomes more than lack of tension; when the gesture finds stability, the pupil lets the last residue go. It is a rebirth, or even more: it is the announcement that the violence has been neutralized and it falls to the ground like a clumsy, oversized dress. Now useless.
The photographic sequence you are observing follows this process of neutralization. It was necessary to reconstruct its moments to move on. But this time, behind the blurry glass of the conscience which is moving forward. Eyes we do not see, but whose gaze suffers through us. Arms pressing memories on the surface.
Photography can capture the feelings, shades and symbols of this unfolding, presenting them with the same urgency of communication, here and now: the happiness of the victim no longer victim, in a rediscovered spontaneity. Softness is discretion and respect: the fragile diaphragm of the lens - and glass - as the amniotic fluid that surrounds the fetus.
The record of the torments is left to the words of the protagonist; the photographic series accompanies and interprets this truth in ten acts: a complete series of images, which dissolves softly – as if lost into a remote sphere – to be observed from a distance.
Under the reassuring label 'Anti-Violence Project': the images, one by one; the flickering of her palms, the hands supporting her head, the crook of her neck.
Serenity comes out of violence: we know it; we can guess it.
The two women together, photographer and model, condemn violence: their agreement; image and corporeality; giving in and holding back, towards freedom.

Hi Batsceba,

First of all, thank you for agreeing to this interview.
My first question is about your artist name. Why did you choose Batsceba Hardy as your official name? Is it just the homage of a passionate reader to Far From the Madding Crowd and its author or do you sort of identify with Hardy's character?

 Concetto: metamorfosi come sconfinamento.   L’individualità si amalgama nella realtà che la circonda, si confonde con la natura, con gli oggetti.  Perde ogni confine spazio temporale.

Intervista a Batsceba Hardy

La scrittrice, artista e fotografa Batsceba Hardy, autrice della raccolta In Utero, ci racconta chi è e come sono nati i suoi racconti.

Batsceba Hardy, tu ami definirti un’artista dell’irrealtà. Ci spieghi meglio che cosa intendi?

Premesso che non amo le domande e nemmeno le definizioni, posso provare a spiegare. Quando ero piccola ho sempre pensato che avrei potuto benissimo essere solo il personaggio del sogno di un altro e così quando ho incontrato uno scrittore nativo americano ho capito perfettamente cosa voleva intendere, dicendo che noi siamo ciò che immaginiamo e la nostra vera vita consiste in quello che noi immaginiamo di noi stessi.
Ecco, “artista” (definizione degli altri perché io preferisco pensarmi come un’artigiana dell’arte) dell’irrealtà, significa proprio questo: poter stare al di fuori, al di là. Vivere perennemente negli interspazi, quelli che possono essere colti dall’obbiettivo fotografico o dal raccontare. Non avere confini, obblighi. In molti miei scritti parlo di invisibilità, trasparenza. E anche nei miei lavori fotografici parlo di vuoto e pieno. Di assenza. Più chiaro?
(Sto sorridendo pensando di avere confuso anche di più. Ma, in fondo, cos’è la realtà?)

E ora veniamo alla tua raccolta In Utero. Nove mesi, nove racconti, nove storie di maternità. Quanto influisce l’essere madre sul tuo modo di scrivere?

Sul mio modo di scrivere nessuno, anzi, direi che per me non esiste differenza fra uno scrittore donna o uomo. Sin da piccola mi sono sempre sentita un essere, prima di tutto, e l’appartenenza a un sesso non è fondamentale. La maternità è vero, è solo femminile, ma non è stato questo a smuovere il mio interesse, quanto proprio la differenza fra le varie reazioni. Come un’indagine sociologica. Avrei potuto andare avanti, ma un racconto al mese mi è sembrato perfetto.

Il titolo è un chiaro omaggio ai Nirvana e ogni racconto è legato a una canzone. Quanto la musica condiziona la tua arte e in particolar modo la tua scrittura?

Diciamo che è un richiamo. Anche Kurt è stato un figlio difficile e ha avuto “una maternità”. E il suo album è stato una pietra miliare.
La musica? E’ essenziale nel mio atto creativo. Ogni racconto, ogni romanzo ha una colonna sonora diversa, che va in loop e mi accompagna fino alla fine. Mi faccio guidare dall’udito e le sensazioni che ne ricavo, odori colori dolori, le traduco nelle parole. Anche molte fotografie hanno una colonna sonora. Eppure amo il silenzio.

E ora un po’ di pubblicità. Perché leggere il tuo libro?

Perché è bello. E’ un po’ come rinascere.
